Samsung's S6 costs more to build and is cheaper than the iPhone 6

Samsung's latest flagship smartphone, the Galaxy S6 Edge, is now the most expensive mainstream phone to manufacture and assemble, according to a teardown analysis by research firm IHS.
IHS dismantled a 64GB version of the Galaxy S6 that was offered for sale to Verizon Wireless Edge phone, estimated to cost $290 for parts and assembly.
That's $34 more than last year's Galaxy S5, and even more than Apple's iPhone6 and iPhone6 Plus phone. IHS estimates material costs for the highest versions of the iPhone6 and iPhone6 Plus phones at $247 and $263, respectively. The 64GB version of the Galaxy S6 The Edge is priced at $699 without a contract, while the iPhone 6 Plus with the same capacity is officially priced at $849 without a contract.
Andrew Rassweiler, the analyst in charge of the breakdowns, said parts costs have been steadily climbing in recent years.
"Samsung uses metal cases and other design elements similar to Apple's, and it's clear that Samsung has studied Apple's phones. The result is a phone that costs less than the iPhone but costs more."
The most expensive part of the S6 Edge is its curved screen. Rassweiler said the screen cost $85 to build.
Next up is Samsung's home-made Exynos7 chip, which costs an estimated $29.50. S6 The Edge is the first phone to use 14-nanometer chip manufacturing technology. The only other manufacturer capable of making 14nm chips is Intel. Apple is expected to use a 14nm chip in its next iPhone.
This new high-end chip needs to be paired with expensive high-end memory. The phone uses 3GB of DDR4 memory made by Samsung, which costs $27. Rassweiler says this is the first time DDR4 memory has been used on a phone.
Rassweiler said Verizon sells the Galaxy S6 The Edge uses a baseband chip made by Qualcomm and costs $15. In addition, AT& The phone sold by T uses a baseband chip made by Samsung.
